It depends on the permit you’re applying for. If you’re taking the FIDE test for a residence permit (B permit), you typically only need to complete the oral part of the exam. However, if you’re applying for a settlement permit (C permit) or Swiss naturalisation, you will usually be required to complete both the oral and written parts of the FIDE exam. Always confirm the exact requirements with your canton or check the FIDE website for updates.

This means you may need to prepare for both the oral test (speaking and interaction) and the written test (reading and writing).

The language passport is a document that confirms your language level based on the results of the test. It is commonly required of non-Swiss residents when applying for a settlement permit (C permit), residence permit, or during family reunification procedures.

The FIDE test assesses your language skills. The test is divided into an oral and listening section, as well as a writing and reading section. Both are separately evaluated. You can take the test in many Accredited test centres in Switzerland. The test is managed by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), and the prices are set by them. This means that the fees are standardised and there are no additional registration fees (administrative fees) for this test.
